About

Mr. Po Chung is Co-founder of DHL International and the Chairman of The Hong Kong Institute of Service Leadership & Management.   Mr. Chung was born in Macao.  He graduated from St. Stephen’s College, Stanley in 1963. He obtained a degree in fisheries management from California State University at Humboldt in 1968 and 13 years later he attended the Stanford Executive Program at Stanford University in 1981. He obtained a Master of Fine Art from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University in 2005. Upon returning to Hong Kong from the States, Mr. Chung worked as Operations Manager with Topper Toys (HK) for two years.   Then, he joined DHL and co-founded DHL International in 1972 and built the company into the most global of all global network service companies.  The DHL worldwide network now operates in more than 228 countries and territories.   During DHL’s international network expansion outside the USA, Mr. Chung provided much of the corporation’s international philosophy and human resource culture of network service leadership insights such as “everyone is a leader for at least 15 minutes every day”, “push decision to the lowest level”, “manage a global network with a culture but not rules and regulations” …  At the age of 52,  Mr. Chung, because of Larry Hillblom's unfortunate plane crush, stepped down from his day-to-day running of the company and subsequently sold his shares at DHL to Deutsche Post in 2002 with the rest of his partners.   Over the years Mr. Chung has been tireless in his community service activities. He was a member of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the Hong Kong Tourism Board, Deputy Chairman of the Ocean Park, Deputy Chairman of the Hong Kong Management Association and the Chairman of the Hong Kong Art Centre. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees at the Hoover Institute at Stanford University and Chinese International School. Mr. Chung is passionate about liberal arts education; entrepreneurship; promoting Hong Kong; creativity and innovation. His professional life has been dedicated in large part to understanding how to provide superb service, how to lead others as superior service leaders, and how to design and operate service sector organizations. In 2004, he spearheaded the creation of the Centre for Asian Entrepreneurship & Business Values (CASEBV) at The University of Hong Kong and had taught a course in Entrepreneurship for 8 years.

In 2006, Mr. Chung supported a programme in Hong Kong’s eight UGC-granted universities to start a Liberal Arts programme for first-year students.  He sponsored 20 Fulbright Scholars to HK to work with the universities to design, develop and teach General Education. As Chairman of the Hong Kong Institute of Service Leadership & Management, Mr. Chung has been dedicated in large part to advocating and promoting a service leadership mindset applicable to today’s world, which has evolved from manufacturing to service-dominated economies, by nurturing and educating leaders and young generations to lead with Competence, Character and Care. Mr. Chung is also author of the Service Masters Editions:  The First Ten Yards, The 25 Principles of Service Leadership, The 12 Dimensions of a Service Leader,  Pillars of a Service Hub, etc.    As a thought leader, Mr. Chung was made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1995 in recognition of his commitment to the arts community and the Silver Bauhinia Star for his distinguished services to the logistics industry in 2002. In 2008, Mr. Chung received the Beta Gamma Sigma International Honoree Award and the University of Hong Kong's Honorary University Fellowship. In 2009, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and later in 2016, an Honorary Fellowship by The Education University of Hong Kong.
